Project 29: Georgia Railroad - Rail to Trails
The Rails to Trails Project – Georgia Railroad includes the establishment of an improved surface trail for non-motorized vehicles along the historic Georgia Railroad corridor between East Broad Street and Old Winterville Road. The trail will allow for pedestrian and bicyclist alike to further participate in activities within Athens-Clarke County without being within close motor vehicle proximity. This project includes design, engineering, and right of way acquisition in preparation for immediate or future trail construction. The project will include three bridges along the trail corridor with educational and informational signage.

The Rail-to-Trails Project is currently divided into two separate trail segments as follows:
- “Segment 1” is the segment of the trail that extends from East Broad Street to Wilkerson Street.
- Land acquisition of “segment 1” by the Unified Government was completed on June 30, 2009, and construction of the East Broad Street Trail Head Plaza was completed in September 2010. The plaza contains benches, bike racks, trash receptacles, and areas for future landscaping. The land acquisition for Segment 1 was partially funded by a Federal Transit Authority (FTA) Grant with the remaining portion from SPLOST 2005 funds.
- “Segment 2” is the segment of the trail that extends from Wilkerson Street to Old Winterville Road.
- Athens-Clarke County received a Federal Highway Administration High Priority Project Program Grant (FHWA) on this Project and a portion of these funds are to be used for the acquisition of property and/or right-of-way on “Segment 2” via compliance with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) process for design and construction.
- On August 3, 2010, the Mayor and Commission approved the Preliminary Plans, and survey and environmental assessments required by the GDOT process and FHWA are pending final approvals and must be completed prior to any property acquisition. Such acquisition is anticipated to begin in fall 2013.
